The way we were…

Everybody is doing it!  Yeah that’s right, a new logo has been rolled out.  I mean if Apple, Google and Microsoft have upgraded logos, I thought we should too.

Here is the before picture:

igearlist3.gif

Cute eh?  But notice how pixelated it is?  That part isn’t good.   If you read the entire site, you’ll learn where we got this logo, but for now I’m not going to say much more.

Here’s the new version we are trying on:

igearlist4.jpg

Cleaner, stronger, and NOT pixelated!  Nice!!  A hearty thank you and mad mad props go out to my friend, fellow paddler and fellow paddle instructor, Michelle!  She worked with me to get this thing rolled out and wow!  What a difference!

Next up, a new blog format.  Oh, we know it’s been long overdue…

Good News! Great Job!

pi_logo1.jpg

Good news!  Literally, we now have good news on our news and jobs page.  Not only that but we now have a super great jobs listing.  We’ve recently teamed up with two amazing resources - PaddlingInstructor.com and OutdoorEd.com to supply new and improved RSS feeds to iGearList.  All the more reason to bookmark that page and come back to it for the latest outdoor press releases and news, and to find out what the best guiding or instructing jobs are in your area.

The other good news is that, in our fledgling state, I’ve been notified that a sale was made off of our classifieds section.  Yep, check this out…  SOLD!  Terrific news for iGearList - one of our first known sales from our classifieds section.  Now that we know it works…g’head, post more ads!

Lastly, this being the height of the holiday season, I’d like to remind you that when you click through our Shop for New Gear page to make your purchases, commissions will be donated to the WildeBeat

Happy, merry!

“Mad Props VI”: A Green Vision

richjpg.jpg

Meet Rich Curtis!  The subject of today’s “mad props”.  When I first launched iGearList, Rich stepped up and contacted his paddling friends with news of the launch.  This was huge boost to iGearList, resulting in our first kayak posts almost immediately!  Thanks, Rich!

But, more than just a help to iGearList, Rich is out to change the world of real estate.  Opening the first “green” real estate, Greenway Properties, in the Sacramento, CA area, he is acting to bring environmentalism to the real estate business.  Greenway Properties  specializes in buying and selling houses that are environmentally friendly, i.e. “green”.  Green buildings are inherently healthier to those living in them, require less energy to use, and use materials that were made with the environement in mind.

Among other things, Rich is lobbying to have green houses listed in the MLS as such, as well as changing how houses are sold - using virtual offices, reducing paperwork, and using recycled paper with soy-based ink.  The end result is a reduction of harm to the inhabitants of houses, and to the environment.

Learn more about Greenway Properties, and hear Rich Curtis on NPR by visiting his website.

Good stuff!

“Mad Props V”: Tim to the Rescue

Ok, so I know what you are thinking.  Did she do any of this iGearList stuff herself?  Yes I did, though I’d still be locked in my room and cursing my computer if it weren’t for the original superstar, the very first person to come to my aid - Tim Sartoris.  Let me explain.

Once upon a time, back when I was deciding on categories and testing things out, I produced a very, shall I say, interesting search malfunction.  Argh!  I’m not going to lie.  It was far beyond anything I could dream of fixing without taking classes and reading reams of books.

So, when Princess Feet (remember her?  no relation to Gear Queen, incidentally) suggested I contact her brother Tim for help, of course I took her up on it.  Here is what was so impressive about Tim. First of all, he jumped right in.  Right away, he got a version of the software and began the troubleshooting it on his own computer in his spare time.  Secondly, he was highly professional - he always wrote me with his findings, clearly and in detail, with possible causes and solutions.  He answered every email I sent, and every question.  Third, he found an easy solution that I could do on my own, which allowed iGearList to launch!  Yes!  (Sure, hire him, fine, but understand I’ll want to steal him from you later on.)

And. Yes, there is more.

Lastly, and lately, he is helping to get the word out - he recently styled us out with some links, and a forum mention .  This kind of help is critical (almost as critical as having functioning PHP) to the livelyhood of iGearList.

Check us out on the San Francisco Disc Golf website(s):

And, of course, we added a Disc Golf  category for folks to use!

Thank you, Tim!

“Mad Props IV”: the big meet-up…

I’ve been meaning to post about Outdoorzy since I came across it awhile back (maybe a month or so ago).  When I first saw Outdoorzy, I quickly recognized what they are about - high quality online social networking for outdoorsy folks  - true Web2.0.  I can definitively say that they are the premier online social network for the outdoors community.  Beyond the networking, you can post and read gear lists, gear reviews, trip reports, and their blog, which contains a variety of news and features a “mountain of the week”. Great stuff.

I originally contacted them for a link exchange and they invited me to put up my business profile.  So, right off the bat, they offered me a really unique and valuable service - a way to spread the word about my website to my target audience.  They also let me know (and they have posted on their site) that they are also starting an online outdoor gear classifieds.  Yep - beyond having an amazing website, and providing a valuable service to myself and others - they are just flat out classy people.  “Mad props” to these folks with “mad skills” and more!

So, why did it take me so long to blog about this?  Well, self-consciousness, and respect, really.  I wanted to get things fixed up nice over here at iGearList before I went blogging about such a great site!  Now, get on over there and get a profile going…and don’t forget to add me as your friend…

“Mad Props III” - PRS - a river of gear!

lots of gear in here...

A few weekends ago, I went up to Pacific River Supply  in El Sobrante, CA to photograph some used gear to kick off iGearList’s listings with.  I knew Mike from when I was the PD at Healing Waters, so I knew I’d find a friendly face, lots of help, and lots of quality used river gear.  I was correct on all counts!  30 photos, and a couple of hours later, the listings were up and detailed.  Hanging out with Mike reminded me of why it is important to me to stay connected to the paddling community, and the outdoor community in general - the people.  Mike is an example of someone with a paddler’s mentality — when help is needed, it’s given without question or hesitation, and otherwise, it’s all smiles, great conversation and optimism.  I think it’s a mentality that is born from years on the river.

Speaking of years on the river, I was also treated to a few classic stories from the formative years of rafting.  The days when his shop, the only rafting resource around, was teaming with employees and shoppers (yep, you got it, days before the internet shopping cart).  Days when they got so many phone calls asking for river beta, that his business partner, Jim Cassady finally sat down and wrote the still-favorite classic California Whitewater so he could get back to work.

Today’s “mad props” go to Mike of Pacific River Supply!  I hope to return the favor and sell off tons of his gear, and more!  If you are looking for a great place to pick up new or used river equipment, and increase your depth of knowledge about rafting and river sports, you should really get out and visit PRS.

“Mad Props II” - Cleaning Up

Ah no picture today folks.   I’ll just say that I’m cleaning up my act here over at iGL, in more ways than one.

Thanks to my sister, and Gear Queen’s brother in law (both accomplished web site gurus, with many well-known web enterprises between them) I have no more lingering formatting issues.  And while I’m on the topic of small miracles, Google actually picks up my website description now!   Thanks, Celine and Dave!

Stay tuned for “Mad Props III”:  PRS - a river of gear!  And “Mad Props IV”:  the big meet-up…

Until then, if you’re on the virge of a gear binge, let me direct you to this offer:

“Mad Props”

1.jpg

Things are starting to look up over here, thanks to a host of individuals to whom I owe some mad, mad props and thanks.  The props might go on for a few blog postings. I’m going to start from the end and work back to the beginning.

Tonight’s props go to the author of The Adventure Blog whose profile identifies him as “Adventure Junkie”.   (I’ll protect what little I know about his true identity.  I don’t know if I need to, but it’s kind of fun.)  First of all, he writes a fantastic blog.  In his blog, he summarizes all kinds of adventure news from several sources in a concise, readable style - sometimes several times a day.  From Everest, to yours truly, he covers the gamut.  Consistantly creating good original content is not easy!  When I found his blog, I knew I found something good.  Secondly, when I asked him if we could exchange links, he did that and then stoked me out with a great post about of iGearList.  That’s just plain awesome.  It was a thrill for me, and I’m sure it will be a real boost to the site.

Tomorrow I’ll follow with some words about the 2 internet gurus who bailed me out of the browser mosh pit.  Until then, read The Adventure Blog!
